Whipsawed
To be badly mauled by volatile price movements when someone makes losing trades, i.e., buys the share  just before prices falls, and sells just before prices rise.

W Formation

Widow and Orphan Stock
these are the Shares which pay high dividends and are very safe. The have a very low volatility, and are little exposed to STYSTEMATIC RISK. At one time public utilities used to offer such shares. But now, except for a few mutual funds, notably The Unit Trust of India, widows and orphans do no seem to have much choice left.

Window Dressing
Apart from the practices referred to in COOKING THE BOOK, this exercise is resorted to by mutual funds and portfolio managers before the half – yearly or yearly account closing when they switch from low – yield shares to high – yield ones, so that the funds’ net asset value (NAV) may appear impressive. If the market is moving up, the fund manager will try to put as much money into it as he can, while if the market is moving down he will sell some shares and put the money in interest – paying securities.

Wire House
A brokerage firm which has fast communication links with its branches.

Working Control
Control of a company by a shareholder or a group of shareholders who own less than 51% of voting shares. In a company in which the shareholding is widely dispersed, it is possible for a minority shareholder, or a number of minority shareholders to work and control the company .
