what is a bear market?

20/10/2009 by admin

The opposite of a bull market is a bear market when prices are falling in a financial market for a prolonged period of time.
A market condition in which the prices of securities are falling, and widespread pessimism causes the negative sentiment to be self-sustaining. As investors anticipate losses in a bear market and selling continues, pessimism only grows. Although figures can vary, for many, a downturn of 20% or more in multiple broad market indexes, such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) or Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (S&P 500), over at least a two-month period, is considered an entry into a bear market. A bear market tends to be accompanied by widespread pessimism.A bear market is slang for when stock prices have decreased for an extended period of time.  If an investor is “bearish” they are referred to as a bear because they believe a particular company, industry, sector, or market in general is going to go down.
